Growing up in a conservative, middle-class family in Texas, Claire Myers Owens sought adventure and freedom at an early age. At twenty years old, she left home and quickly found a community of like-minded free spirits
and intellectuals in New York’s Greenwich Village. There Owens wrote novels and short stories, including the controversial novel The Unpredictable Adventure A Comedy of Woman’s Independence, which was banned by
the New York Public Library for its “risqué” content. Drawn to ideals of selfactualization and creative freedom, Owens became a key figure in the Human Potential Movement along with founder Abraham Maslow and Aldous
Huxley, and became an ardent follower of Carl Jung. In her later years, Owens devoted her life to the practice of Zen Buddhism, moving to Rochester, NY, where she joined the Zen Center and studied under Roshi Philip Kapleau. She published her final book, Zen and the Lady, at the age of eighty-three.
Friedman’s rediscovery of Owens brings well-deserved attention to her little known yet extraordinary life and passionate spirit. Drawing upon autobiographies, letters, journals, and novels, Friedman chronicles Owens’s robust intellect and her tumultuous private life and, along the way, shows readers what makes her story significant. With very few role models in the early twentieth century, Owens blazed her own path of independence and enlightenment.

Captive of the Horde King Horde Kings of Dakkar Book 1 edition by Zoey Draven Romance eBooks Reviews

  • In horror, Luna saw smoke from a burning field, and dread spread through the village as everyone rushed to form a line to dump water on it before the Dakkari brought their wrath down on the people. Mistakes were not permitted, and mercy was not given. At the end of the line of buckets, she saw the look on her brother’s face and knew who had caused this. The Dakkari would be coming and would demand retribution – someone would die!

They came that night, 7 huge Dakkari. Luna put on a cloak and went to the middle of the street to meet up with them and explain, fully prepared to give her own life in exchange for her brother’s if that was required. Their leader was one of six horde kings who kept order and dealt out punishments. Harming the land was an insult to their deities. Luna stepped in front of her brother who had run to her and, looking into the horde king’s eyes, she told him he did not have the right to take her brother’s life – she would not let him. Instead, she asked him to take her life, as she was responsible for her brother. What the horde king wanted was that she be his concubine, warm his bed, serve him; to save Kivan, she had to agree.

When they arrived at camp, a bath was prepared for Luna. When the horde king entered the tent, the women who had bathed her left and he told Luna she was to bathe him. She was terrified, but he told her to relax, that he would not take her until she healed from the abrasive ride to camp on the beast. Nervous, she asked if the Dakkari often took human whores rather than their own women. He told her she was not his whore – she was his Queen! What kind of life did this mean for her? What was she expected to do?

I love this author’s books, and this one was no exception! The horde king is easy to like and respect. He treated Luna very well. She was a bit hard-headed, but that’s understandable under the circumstances and not knowing what to expect. The story line took our characters along a path of growth and understanding. The reader may be in for some surprises along the way. Grab your copy and enjoy the alien experience!
  • I normally like to read the books from this writer. However, I couldn't get into this book. My issue is the same as another readers. The female agrees to obey the horse king then promptly starts disobeying and fighting him. For me it would have been better if he had kidnapped her or if she had never agrees to obey.
  • Don't get me wrong. I'm liking this book. But 85% of it, is very reminiscent of K. Ashley's The Golden Dynasty. Even down to the character of "Colors" used etc.. to describe/or represent certain things. The language, the culture, the people, the events that occur here as well; have the Golden Dynasty stamp on it. if just a little bit more tame in certain circumstances.

This story doesn't have the feel of an Alien sci-fi story to me at all. If you liked GD you will like this as well, but also feel as if you read it before....

With that being said, I loved how many things played out here. I absolutely love our H/h, and the simple yet complicated dance they did with learning one another. It's still a beautiful story. And the way this one introduces another Horde King, I am intrigued with what book 2 will have to offer.

    I would recommend this read.
  • I have read other books written by ZOEY DRAVEN. . This MIGHT be my NEW FAV. I see this story being more about the love of family, community and the lengths you would go to in order to protect the ones you love. You have LUNA who truly loved her mother and her younger brother. She sacrificed her hopes and dreams in order to save her brother. Yet by unselfishly giving up her life, LUNA truly finds her REAL LIFE.

LUNA'S stubborn and persistent ways proves to be her strength and it is what makes her stand out in the eyes of the WARRIOR HORDE KING. I love the wisdom of this FIERCE, INTENSE & FORCEFUL (scary/sexy) WARRIOR.

ZOEY builds this strange planet, DAKKAR where of course humans are again lowest on the food chain, destroying the planet and believing folklore about other beings. Sometimes what you think you KNOW, isn't the REAL story. I like the way the author uncovers little gems in the story in order to show the OTHER side.

Maybe similar stories have been told, BUT I LOVED THIS STORY . . . IT WAS REALLY GOOD !!!
  • I enjoyed seeing the main female character, Luna (a human), learn how to live in a different culture with the original people of the planet, the Dakkari.

The romance was believable and the sex scenes were hot.

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Illustrated Edition Sherlock Holmes Detective Classics Series Arthur Conan Doyle Books Reviews

  • Really wanted the illustrations. I didn't realize that there were so many illustrations and that this book prints the stories in the original Strand magazine format. It's just like reading the original with numerous illustrations embedded inside the text. Totally superior to reading text only. Got this used for a few dollars and totally worth it. Recommend to anyone who want the full experience. But remember, not all the stories were illustrated and therefore some are missing form this book.
  • This review applies to the version of the book available from MysteriousPress.com/Otto Penzler editions.

There are a number of one-star reviews that some versions are missing any part of the text that was originally printed in a newspaper or letter format - or in the case of this novel, the manuscript that details the legend concerning Sir Hugo and the Hound of the Baskervilles.

I've doublechecked, and the MysteriousPress e-book does NOT appear to be missing any of these sections. The manuscript is definitely there, as are the few newspaper articles in chapter 4.

The story, of course, is classic Holmes at his best - disguises, uncovering clues, setting Watson on a task without giving him all the details, requiring the client to take some risks, and finding the villain. Well worth the read, and well-formatted.
  • If you are buying this book to have the Sherlock Holmes stories that were printed in the "Strand," then this is a great buy at $8.00. However, if you are particularly interested in the illustrations by Sidney Paget (it's "Sidney," folks, Sydney Paget was also a Englishman, but not an illustrator), then you are probably in for disappointment if you've seen them before. The original illustrations look like they've been xeroxed on a 1980s copier with the contrast turned to maximum. The shadowy drawings have been reproduced as starkly black and white with little of the wonderful shading that characterizes the original artwork. In short, buy this book for a cheap collection of Doyle's work (although not a complete collection of Sherlock Holmes) to carry around and read for fun, but if you're trying to get it accompanied by Paget's artwork (which frankly has become the iconic portrayal of Holmes), look for another anthology.
  • I read this as a kid and the creepiness of the legendary hellhound made quite an impression. I decided to re-read it when I found out it was set in Devon, which has special associations for me. Fortunately, there is a lot of description of the Devon moors by Dr. Watson (a tad bit unrealistically, it must be admitted, in his letters to Holmes and in his diary) and it contributes to the brooding mood of the story.

The book is, of course, well-written, but what I noticed was that it's when Sherlock Holmes is present that the pages turn the fastest. Doyle does a terrific job of creating an unforgettable, quirky character through mostly dialogue. Holmes is often a bit of a buffoon, really, who can't let an opportunity go by to show his genius. At the end of the book, when he could have gracefully allowed Dr. Watson to take all the credit for having found out, entirely on his own, a vital piece of information, Holmes says "This also you cleared up in a very effective way, though I had already come to the same conclusions from my own observations."

He has to drive it home that nothing escapes his brilliant investigative skills. As if Watson didn't already know that. What would it have hurt to have allowed Watson to think he had contributed something necessary? Somehow, despite this selfish boorishness, you still find Holmes endearing. Maybe that's because it hints at a chink in his armor, an underlying need to be seen as perfect in this area of his life. A hint of insecurity in such a "masterful" man, as Watson calls him, is appealing.

One part of the book made me laugh, and not in a good way. The escaped convict, a vicious and diabolical murderer--who Dr. Watson is at pains to point out is unrepentant and unredeemable and likely to commit more murders if he isn't apprehended--is allowed to go free for the sake of one weeping woman's feelings about what he'd been like as a child. But here's the truly awful part. He's only allowed to go free if he leaves England and takes his murderous ways to South America. Obviously, S.American lives cannot compare in value to English lives, so it makes perfect sense to send a murderer off to that distant land. What a happy outcome for all involved! They congratulate themselves on this intelligent solution.

Another thing that struck me as I read was how many of Agatha Christie's mysteries (particularly her Poirot stories) had elements taken from this one Doyle mystery. I began to understand why she was so modest about the success of her books and didn't like to be praised for them. I imagine she felt the credit often went to Doyle. Though, in fact, her own writing has stood the test of time so whatever she owed to him for plot points , she certainly deserved the credit for her own creations.

I would have given this classic five stars except for the two last paragraphs in the book, which undermined the whole mystery. When it comes right down to it, the murderer's basic design is hugely flawed. Dr. Watson points it out and Holmes admits he has no answer for it. He gives some possible, speculative solutions but none of them hold up very well. We're supposed to believe the murderer is one of the cleverest Holmes has ever come up against, but the very last paragraph reveals that he was incredibly shortsighted and frankly stupid.

All the same, it holds up well and is much more accessible to a modern audience than many classics. That's probably partly due to everyone's familiarity with Holmes, but it's also due to Doyle's clean and crisp writing. You won't regret giving it a read.
  • What a treat for Sherlock Holmes fans. Of course, I've read all of the stories and novels. Of course I already have the complete collection, and then some. This book is an amazing addition for fans.

First, the downside. This is a facsimile of the ORIGINAL Strand issues, which means that some pages have text that looks a bit faded, or light, as has been complained about by other reviewers. But I ask you, what did the typical print look like 126 years ago? Most readers picked up magazines that had "soft print" off the shelf. So, I guess it's not a downside after all.

To the most striking positive, this is Sherlock Holmes as was read in it's originality! This is as close to an actual copy as you will get. Next to my original 1907 edition of "Adventures, Memoirs, and Sign of Four" this is my second favorite collection of stories. (I admit, I would much rather read this copy, then risk turning the pages of my 110 year old book!

To read it in it's original magazine, double column format with artwork from Sidney Paget is simply a treat! It transports you to a simpler time on the back streets of London.

As a devoted fan and fellow Sherlock Holmes author, I cannot but praise it highly!

You will not regret this book purchase.

An Economist Walks into a Brothel And Other Unexpected Places to Understand Risk Allison Schrager 9780525533962 Books Reviews

  • If the title doesn't induce you to buy this book, then the first few pages will do it. Alison Schrager has done a masterful job explaining in plain English -- using rather (ahem) unconventional examples and illustrations -- of how to take account of and manage risk in your life, drawing on fundamental lessons of finance and economics. I predict this book will be huge best seller, and help make believers out of some doubters about the usefulness of economic reasoning. An economics and a best seller? -- no not a contradiction in terms. This book demonstrates that, get it, read it and you'll see what I mean
  • What a great and fun read! An economist and a journalist, Schrager writes lucidly and compellingly about how to hedge our bets and plan for the future. The book is incredibly readable, and the author explains economic principles without dumbing down the material or giving it a partisan spin. By using examples of big time risk takers, from prostitutes and horse breeders to magicians and big wave surfers, she gives the reader unexpected models that highlight important economic concepts. A fascinating read with smart analysis, this is a book we should all own!
  • If you haven't given much thought to risk or read any of the pertinent literature or studies, then perhaps this book will help focus you and provide some new insights into human decision making that had been hidden. But I struggled to find anything new here. Moreover, the deference to finance seems misplaced. "Financial economics is the science of risk," writes Schrager. A science? What about the last financial crisis? And the 2000 stock market bubble? And the numerous hedge funds that have closed shop in the past 10 years? And the persistent underperformance of most fund managers? Obviously, other forces are at work here, which makes the study of risk complex and nuanced.

That said, risk management is a subject that deserves everyone's attention, to be sure. I suspect most of us aren't great at spotting, weighing and managing opportunities and risks, and perhaps this book will help -- so long as you haven't already delved deeply into the subject. If you're just starting out or early in your thought process, this book isn't a bad place to start.
  • This book is intended for people new to concepts of risk management, using some colorful real-life examples, such as big wave surfing, racehorse breeding, and the titular brothels. Alas, some of the connections between real-life risk-takers and the specified concepts are very thin. In addition, there was a dimension to risk that I found not explored quite as well, which is the human element.

For example, in the section about paparazzi, the person profiled set up a "cartel" of sorts, which members would sometime break - a risk hedging tool often can break due how humans actually behave. Similarly, the book ends talking about the need for regulators to keep up with evolving risks (no argument there), but without the recognition there's a reason the savviest risk-taking aren't regulators.

I think this would be a good book for the general public as well as schools, going down to high school level. You hook them with what seems like it would be a titillating story (legal brothels), but it's really about how to structure a business so that it's a win-win for all involved (owner, employees, and customers). There's a good index and lots of notes at the end that could be used for deeper discussion and exploration in class.
  • Entertaining and filled with examples, this book is a great read for non-economists (think Freakonomics). I did spot a couple typos, but they were minor and nothing that can't easily be forgiven, considering how recently the book came out. Would recommend for those interested in economics, probability or statistical thinking. The author references several interviews with lots of different people which make this book a lovely experience even for those already familiar with risk assessment and financial economics. 5 stars, worth checking out.
  • This is a brilliantly conceived book in which Dr. Schrager presents a wonderful series of stories, or as she calls them ‘parables,’ to support her thesis that the basic principles of financial economics can be applied to everyday risk decisions. Each chapter features an interesting narrative about a fascinating character or two she has interviewed to cleverly illustrate various ways to more realistically assess and manage risk.

In a recent interview about this book, Dr Schrager shares her passion for her work. It is clear that this lead her to interview people who were just as passionate about their work. This contributes significantly to the ability of the author to delightfully and lucidly share her expertise in a notoriously difficult field of study. I think this book is a significant contribution to the field for its originality and intelligibility.

Mark for his love of art but even more his love for God as we get a glimpse into the man's soul that sees beyond the art into the artist's mind and the message there. May we all be drawn along the path into prayer and meditation and connection with Christ that Fr. Mark hopes we walk, accompanied by our angels, as we turn the pages."

The Connected Child Bring Hope and Healing to Your Adoptive Family Audible Audio Edition Karyn B Purvis David R Cross Wendy Lyons Sunshine Anna Crowe McGrawHill Education Books Reviews

  • This is the textbook for foster (and fost-to-adopt) parents. If you do not have it yet, stop reading reviews now and buy it on your tablet or or audible so you can read it immediately. If you have friends or family new to fostering, buy them this book now.

This book should be given to every foster parent upon completion of training or during training. It's a shame they mention the book, the author, and the research during training but not simply hand out the book as your reference Bible for the tough times sure to come.

I wish we had this book when we had our first placement. He had been through hell and his behaviors were beyond our comprehension. Within the first few pages of the book is a table that connects behaviors to feelings that should be passed out to every foster parent before a child moves in.
  • This was a very helpful book! We are in the process of adoption, and it was recommended to us to read this book. We have listened to Dr. Purvis in the past and learned so much for her approach. This book will be kept within handy reach. She has so many wonderful ideas for how to interact with a child coming from a traumatic background. It is helpful for any child, not just a foster or adopted child!
  • Dr. Purvis spent much of her life studying and working with adopted children from many walks of life. In her book "The Connected Child" she makes gross generalizations for ALL adopted children stating that they are ALL "at risk" and therefore all will act out. As I have read this book, I can see the behaviors she describes in many children, biological or adopted. In fact, as I reflect on my childhood, I see many of the behaviors in myself.
The parenting techniques that Dr. Purvis offers are great and often work very well. The techniques don't include screaming and yelling, solitary punishment, or physical punishment. The techniques are focused on redirection and correction of the behaviors. It gives you techniques on how to train a child to control their behaviors and express how they are feeling. It gives insights on how to help your child make decisions by giving them choices. It gives you tools to use to help kids to stop and think about what they have just done wrong, and how to do it right.
If you can read past the generalizations of "at risk" adopted children, the parenting techniques and tools provided in this book are great and I think any parent, of biological children or adopted, can benefit from the lessons.
  • Was this book really only $6.74?! I have a decent foundation in child development and managing "normal" behavior, but I read this book in preparation for becoming a foster parent to kids who have experienced trauma. This is an absolutely fabulous book on basic parenting, with very specific instructions for how to work with troubled children. I love it and I know I am going to be structuring our home life around what I've learned from this book.
  • This book was recommended to me by my adoption caseworker and by other adoptive moms in a public forum. I strongly recommend it! We are about to adopt siblings and, even though they don't have any current behavior concerns like hoarding or RAD, this book has still been helpful in parenting any children who have experienced trauma. The book has lots of examples and lots of specific ways to help connect and support your children. I'm about halfway through the book now (I read half and then re-read half with a pencil, making notes and underling parts I wanted to remember) and the chapters on "Felt Safety" and "Teaching Life Values" have been the most helpful so far - well, that our struggles are not ours alone - others have had them and many have surpassed them. Karyn Purvis is an expert in the field - and after reading this book, I understand why her name is so well known. Her work is realistic, down to earth, and filled with hope. If you are adopting or work with foster or adopted children, this is a great read.

    The book's main points are
    - The key is to treat the whole child - and we'll help you do that!
    - Start where your child is
    - Compassion is key
    - Focus on nurturing and structure / connecting and correcting
    - "At-risk youngsters are capable of making tremendous strides toward overcoming early hardships and limitations."
  • This book is about attachment parenting or caregiving to children who have come through difficult situations. It gives ideas on how to approach a difficult child with love and understanding. I will keep this book as a companion to my baby book on attachment parenting called Christian Parenting and Childcare by Dr. William Sears. This particular book does NOT use scripture but it is scriptural in its teaching. Good for foster children, adoptive children from other cultures and children who have been in violent or emotionally abusive homes.
  • After floundering for the past year trying to parent our boys in a traditional way, we were introduced to TBRI and this book. Karyn and David are compassionate, thoughtful, patient and have research that backs up this method. We have been using TBRI for several months and it is doing wonders for both my husband and myself, and our boys. If you have children from hard places, trauma, or even if you're looking for a new, connected way to parent your children that do not come from trauma, I highly recommend this book. I plan on reading it again and again.

The Path Made Clear Discovering Your Life Direction and Purpose Oprah Winfrey Full Cast 9781250317032 Books Reviews

  • I thought this waa written by Oprah. Its not. The introduction, the epilogue, 1st listing in each chapter, and.several quotes are from her but 99% are from other people. Not what I thought it would be. Its not stories but quotes. Im disappointed.
  • Bought this on kindle and was disappointed to see how little content there is in this book. It's only about 200 pages and half of them are just pictures of flowers. Was hoping for more insight from Oprah but it's just a selection of short quotes from people. Maybe nice for a gift but not actually a useful book.
  • The help that comes when you're seeking guidance on how to move forward in your calling is amazing. This book came out on a day where the resistance I was feeling within myself felt overwhelming.

It was as though I was pushing the break and gas pedal of my life at the same time and with the same level of pressure and passion. I wanted to move forward, but I also wanted to stop.

Only an hour into this book and one question after the other, one fervent prayer after the other, so many answered. I bought both the audiobook and kindle version so I could listen and study the words of these wise leaders. I encourage you to do the same as there's not only soul knowledge within these pages, but hope.

    XO, Brie
  • The title really drew me in - I was ready and excited to clear the path on my journey. I adore Oprah, she’s terrific and I was really ready to dig in to her wonderful new book. However, I was surprisingly disappointed and agree with others that the title is misleading and there is not much content - pretty pictures though. It might be a good ‘coffee table’ book, or as another reviewer said “a nice house warming gift” but it definitely did not deliver what I was expecting from Oprah.
  • So if you are looking for concrete direction in figuring out your life, this is not the book for you. I enjoyed the book but it is basically a book of motivational quotes and pretty pictures. It would make a nice "housewarming" gift but it's definitely not what the title leads one to think.
  • everything that oprah says touches my heart. i cant get enough of her and her podcast and shows.

these pages include colorful quotes and short stories from every insightful creative spiritual teacher around. all in one book. it really is a magical book.

i think everyone needs it in their lives. to go to when you need it. you can just flip to any page and see what you need to read and know for the day.
  • I am so happy with my purchase! The pages are filled with quotes from many people whom have influenced Oprah in a teachable aspect. As well as her own discovery to her purpose in life. I haven't finished it yet but it is a quick read. I can see myself going back to this book when in need of inspirational words.
  • I, too, just purchased the book. I ordered it because it was Oprah. Then reading the comment that all proceeds were going to her hometown ... that did it. "Reaching back" "Paying forward" and all those other servant leadership qualities!!
    Correction Worldwide role model!!!

Brilliant, witty, perceptive essays about fly-fishing, the natural world, and life in general by the acknowledged master of fishing writers

With his inimitable combination of wit and wisdom, John Gierach once again celebrates the fly-fishing life in Standing in a River Waving a Stick and notes its benefits as a sport, philosophical pursuit, even therapy "The solution to any problem-work, love, money, whatever-is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be." After all, fly-fishing does teach important life lessons, says Gierach-about solitude, patience, perspective, humor, and the sublime coffee break.

Recounting both memorable fishing spots and memorable fish, Gierach discusses what makes a good fly pattern, the ethics of writing about undiscovered trout waters, the dread of getting skunked, and the camaraderie of fellow fishermen who can end almost any conversation with "Well, it's sort of like fishing, isn't it?" Reflecting on a lifetime of lessons learned at the end of a fly rod, Gierach concludes, "The one inscription you don't want carved on your tombstone is 'The Poor Son of a Bitch Didn't Fish Enough.'" Fortunately for Gierach fans, this is not likely to happen.

Standing in a River Waving a Stick Audible Audio Edition John Gierach David Colacci Tantor Audio Books Reviews

  • Bought this for my boyfriend who is an avid fisherman he LOVES this book. He is constantly reading me excerpts and they are really interesting and often make me laugh. He intends to buy many many more of John Gierach's books! He without hesitation gave this 5 stars and as a big reader I trusted his judgement ) Enjoy!
  • Another great book by the master!
  • Once more, John has done it--wovn stories in such a way that you feel like a welcome guest, along for the ride on near and distant streams, pursuing the ever-elusive trout!
  • As with Gierach's other books, I found "Standing In a River Waving a Stick to be entertaining as well as enlightening. He seems to have a way to write about fly fishing and life in a special way. If you love fly fishing or have never tried it, I think you will enjoy this book as well as his other books!
  • Well worth your time if you're even remotely into fly fishing. The author has a great selection of stories from his experiences. Will definitely be reading more of his books.
  • This can be both good and bad. As someone who has struggled with the desire to spend time on rivers more than life's responsibilities allow, it can cause some personal struggles. On the other hand, it's just what the doctor would order to create a better balanced life. I know I'll never satiate my desire to be on a trout stream - at least for as long as I am working on a full time basis, have family demands and community commitments . It is inspiring to read about someone who lives life simply enough to make spending time on the river (lake or pond) a priority, not knowing for sure why.
  • JOHN you thieving bass turf, you plagiarized all my dreams so now I can just curl up with nothing to look forward to since you depicted all the beauty, mystery, challenges, excitement and sublime imagery for me. My only salvation is that you'll still be out there living the dream with that willow branch in your hand and feeding some fish for the rest of us. "Gone Fishing ... Again". Rock on John!
  • The title says it all as far as I am concerned as it is' anthropomorphized' into the bubble above the heads of two coyotes, apparently watching someone stand in a river whiles waving a stick.
